goals, resolutions, and the like

I've been thinking a lot lately about being goal-oriented, and how growth sometimes seems to cost more than what it's worth. At first I thought I was just indulging my tendency toward laziness (which I do more often than I'd like to admit) and then I read this. Not entirely sure what the right answer to this question is, but I'm glad to know someone else seems to be thinking some of these thoughts.

I've got another read for you: why we're not emergent by two guys that should be. It's written by a reformed pastor in his 30s that does top notch research, and an ESPN analyst.
As far as the goals, I'm not purpose drive, but I like to set goals that are incredibly hard to attain, but only one or two. I made the mistake years ago of setting too many.
