A Consistent Ethic of Human Life, or Jesus vs. Jack Bauer

Click here to read a great article by Skye Jethani about Christians, torture, and a holistic ethic of the sanctity of life.

"We have taught our people to oppose abortion, but have we failed to lift up the larger ethic of life's sanctity which applies far beyond the first, second, or third trimester?" A good point, and another point that i might add is that it would be reckless to release a prisoner that is implicated in the POTENTIAL of a threat to the welfare of our country and it's people.
Jack Bauer does make good TV though.

I agree that releasing someone to do more harm (even if it is only "potential harm") is a bad thing. I also suspect that there are situations where torture might be necessary to obtain information that is vital to the well-being of large groups of people. But torture is something that should be the exception, not the rule (which I believe it is), and more importantly, should not be something that we cheer for (or at, in the case of Jack Bauer.) Like war, torture is a necessary evil to be avoided at all reasonable costs. It should never be common practice or a first resort. Miss you Jack.
